Google Files app integrates Gemini AI for smarter PDF searches

The updated Files by Google app now features a new overlay integrated with Gemini AI. Users can take advantage of this functionality to search the content of PDF files and ask any questions about their content. This feature is particularly beneficial for navigating long documents.

Details about the new option are highlighted by 9to5Google. This update will please Gemini users who frequently use a similar AI querying option for screen content. Searching PDFs can be especially useful for longer documents, such as user manuals or extensive presentations. In the pop-up window, you can pose a question, and the answer will be displayed shortly afterward.

The information obtained from Gemini can later be copied or directly shared. This allows elements searched in PDFs to be conveniently used, for instance, in emails or messaging conversations.

Interestingly, at launch, this feature will work exclusively in the Files by Google app and, unfortunately, will not be available in similar document browsers within Google Docs. However, it's likely that this is just the initial phase of the Gemini overlay's development, and its functionality will eventually be broadened.

To use the new option in the overlay, you need to launch Gemini after the desired PDF has already been opened in Files. According to 9to5Google, the new option becomes visible after updating the Google app to version 16.0.5 or newer.
