Did Trump have a chance for a truce?
Brzezinski noted that Trump's policy was not only morally repugnant but also illogical from the standpoint of U.S. strategic interests. The former Pentagon official pointed out that Trump had a chance to achieve a lasting truce in Ukraine, but his actions led to concessions toward Russia. He stressed the need to increase pressure on Russia through support for Ukraine and tightening sanctions.
According to Brzezinski, the Trump administration adopted the role of a neutral mediator, which ceded ground to Russia. The former Pentagon official believes that real security guarantees for Ukraine can only be provided by European forces supported by the U.S. Brzezinski also criticized the idea of a minerals agreement that does not give Ukraine any real protections.
