Mark Carney, who also led the central bank of the United Kingdom, has taken over as Canada's prime minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Governor General Mary Simon. Born on March 16, 1965, Carney is now the 24th prime minister in Canada's history.

After winning the Liberal Party leadership election with 85.9% of the vote, Carney immediately addressed the trade tensions with the United States. The USA is a country "we can no longer trust," Carney stated, announcing plans to seek new international partnerships.

In the coming week, Carney plans his first foreign visits to London and Paris. He will also need to decide whether to call for early elections. Although Canadian federal elections are scheduled for October, there is a possibility they could be moved up to late April or May.

New government and possible elections

Governor General Mary Simon also swore in the new government. As the leader of a minority government, Carney might seek support from opposition parties to begin a new parliamentary session. Plans include unveiling the government's program and introducing necessary legislation. The decision on early elections could significantly influence Canada's political landscape.
