While Chinese and Japanese cuisines are familiar to us, Korean dishes remain somewhat mysterious. Bulgogi beef will convince you to try oriental dishes and invite Korean flavors into your kitchen for good. The secret to bulgogi's taste is the special marinade, which gives the meat its juiciness and unique aroma.

What is bulgogi?

The name "bulgogi" comes from the Korean words "bul" (fire) and "gogi" (meat), which literally means "fire meat." Traditionally, bulgogi was grilled over an open flame, often over charcoal, but preparation methods varied by region. This dish was once the domain of the nobility and wealthy citizens, but fortunately, that's now just a memory, and everyone can enjoy the flavor of delicious beef.

Bulgogi is one of the most recognizable Korean dishes globally and is often the first dish that comes to mind when we think of this country's cuisine.

Step 2. Prepare the marinade. In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, pepper, and soy sauce. Add the sliced meat, green onions, and garlic, and mix well. Cover and marinate for at least an hour. Ideally, prepare the meat the day before and let it marinate overnight.

Step 3. Prepare the remaining ingredients. Slice the onion into feathers, chop the green onions, and separate the shimeji mushrooms, cutting off their base.

Step 4. Heat oil in a pan and fry the marinated beef. Once it starts to brown, add the onion. After a while, add the shimeji mushrooms and chopped green onions. Sauté everything together.

Step 5. Transfer the cooked meat to a platter. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and garnish with green onions. Serve the dish with cooked rice or noodles. Enjoy!
