The sale still needs to be approved by the NBA board of directors, which includes franchise owners. Previously, the highest amount of $6.05 billion was paid in 2023 for the American football team Washington Commanders.

According to media reports, the new owner of the club is expected to be William Chisholm, co-founder and managing director of Symphony Technology, a California-based private equity firm. The group of investors also includes the current co-owner of the Boston franchise, Robert Hale; president of Related Companies, Bruce Beal Jr.; and the investment firm Sixth Street.

In 2002, the Grousbeck group purchased the Celtics for $360 million.

Under the leadership of Jayson Tatum, the Boston Celtics won their 18th NBA championship in July 2024, 16 years after claiming their previous title. In doing so, they became the most decorated team in league history, surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers.
