A CNN source familiar with the conversation said the presidential rivals spoke by phone after the assassination attempt on Saturday evening, at 8:00 PM. The conversation was described as "good, short and respectful."
A senior White House official told CNN that the president wanted to speak directly with his rival. Biden reportedly reiterated his statement that "there is no place in our country for political violence" and assured Trump that he was directing agencies to conduct a full investigation.
The network also confirmed the conversation with two other White House officials. Still, they declined to provide further details of the discussion between the head of state and the former president.

CNN also noted that the politicians had not spoken for years, not even during the TV debate organized by CNN. The current and former president communicated only through their representatives.
The situation changed only after the failed assassination attempt on the Republican candidate, which resulted in Trump suffering an injury to his ear. However, the former president has already been discharged from the hospital.
Law enforcement confirmed two fatalities: a member of the audience and the shooter. Two additional people were seriously injured. The FBI reported that it had identified the person involved in the assassination attempt.
