Add flair to your herring salad with pickled onions
There are many ways to make herring salad. One popular version includes beets. However, you might want to get creative and add an unconventional ingredient next time. This ingredient usually doesn't appear in the classic recipe, which is a pity because it significantly enhances the salad's flavor.
Herring is a type of fish often served at parties in various forms. A common and impressive recipe is herring salad with beets, which is quite simple to make. I enjoy this version, but I also like experimenting with other variations. One particular method appealed to me.
What does this trick involve? It's nothing complicated—it's simply about using pickled red onion. Vegetables taken from apple cider vinegar, water, salt, and sugar will uniquely taste the salad. Perhaps you'll soon discover this yourself: herring and pickles complement each other perfectly.
The recipe is not difficult; apart from using pickled onion, it's nothing particularly innovative. It's also worth noting the inclusion of an apple—another ingredient that, in my opinion, should not be missing from this recipe.
Herring salad with beets and pickled onions
Ingredients:
- about 14 oz herring fillets,
- 2 medium-sized beets,
- 3 eggs,
- pickled red onion (approximately ½ a head),
- 2 pickles,
- 1 apple,
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise,
- 3 tablespoons Greek yogurt,
- 1 tablespoon mustard,
- chives,
- salt,
- pepper.
Preparation:
- Bake the beets in foil (about 70 minutes at 390°F), cool, gently peel, and cut into cubes.
- Cut the herring into similar-sized pieces (if they are salted, you may need to soak them in cold water first).
- Also, cut the hard-boiled eggs and chop the pickles and apples a little finer.
- Transfer everything into a bowl and add some pickled red onion, chopped chives, mayonnaise, and Greek yogurt.
- Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Refrigerate the salad, as it tastes cold and needs time for the flavors to blend.
