As reported by the VSquare portal, Zelensky asked Orban for assistance on July 2, when the Hungarian prime minister visited Kyiv. Over a week later, on July 11, Orban met with Donald Trump.
Zelensky managed to speak with the former US president on July 19. After the conversation, the head of the Ukrainian state announced that there would be a face-to-face meeting.
VSquare emphasizes that it is unknown whether Orban ultimately played a decisive role in organizing the conversation. Other politicians, including Polish President Andrzej Duda and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, assisted Ukraine.
What would Trump do about Ukraine?
Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized American policy toward Ukraine. At one point, he argued that if he were president, the war would end almost immediately. Meanwhile, his vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance said that he "doesn't care what happens to Ukraine."
In a column for the "Daily Mail," Boris Johnson argued that Trump's stance is merely a smokescreen, as in his opinion, "he understands the reality: Ukraine's defeat would be a huge defeat for America."
