Zelensky doubts Trump's plan to end Ukraine conflict
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with "Il Foglio," stated that Donald Trump does not have clear plans to end the war.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with the Italian newspaper "Il Foglio," expressed his opinion that Donald Trump does not have detailed plans to end the war in Ukraine. The interview was conducted by journalist Cecilia Sala, who was recently released from prison in Iran.
Zelensky referred to Trump's words, who stated that Vladimir Putin must end the war, or else it will get "worse." Zelensky assessed that when Trump says "worse," he means worse for Russia. He emphasized that it is important for such a message to come from a strong person.
Zelensky: "The guarantee is NATO"
Almost everything depends on what we Ukrainians can obtain to protect ourselves and to avoid repeating past mistakes, and on Putin, whether he wants to stop the invasion, the president assessed. He then cautioned: "I think he does not want to."
He also explained: "Our recent history is the reason why we are no longer ready to give up something that belongs to us without a serious guarantee of peace in return." He emphasized that such a guarantee is NATO.
"In exchange for giving up our nuclear weapons," he declared, recalling the Budapest Agreement of 1994, "we have a war."
When asked about other security guarantees besides NATO, such as a common defense pact with the United Kingdom, Poland, and the Baltic states, Zelensky stated that without Americans, Europeans would not take on the obligation to stop Russia. He added that a channel of dialogue with Trump could be useful for Europe and Ukraine.
