What makes toast unhealthy?
Researchers from the University of Austin in Texas have discovered that toasting bread until golden can create numerous harmful compounds. During the toasting process, the air's fine particulate matter level can soar to about 28-37 micrograms per cubic meter, far exceeding the World Health Organization's recommended limit of roughly 2.3 micrograms.
Such findings reveal that consuming well-toasted bread may introduce more toxins into our systems than inhaling car exhaust!
Reconsidering toast for breakfast
British nutrition expert Daniel Herman also advises against the routine of eating toast at breakfast. Speaking with Express, he highlighted that toast is among the unhealthiest elements of our morning meal.
Herman points out that toasting enhances the bread's appearance and texture and reduces its nutritional content. Furthermore, adding butter or margarine turns it into a calorie-dense food, contributing to weight gain.
Healthy alternatives to consider
Instead of toast, Herman suggests choosing whole grain bread consumed in its natural, "raw" state. It's richer in fiber and nutrients than white bread and pairs excellently with avocado, a source of healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.
He cautions that consuming fried foods, including toast, heightens the risk of heart disease, strokes, and other chronic ailments. The frying process reduces bread's nutritional value through high temperatures and fats.
