"Worst race in history": The White House mocks Putin
Vladimir Putin has announced his intention to run in the upcoming Russian presidential elections. The White House reacted to this decision by the long-standing leader.
A spokesperson for the USA's National Security Council briefly responded on Friday to Putin's announcement of his participation in the presidential race.
John Kirby described it as the "worst race in Russian history", adding, "That's all I can say about it."
At 71, Putin has led Russia since 2000 following Yeltsin's appointment of him as successor. After two constitutional presidential terms, Putin served as Prime Minister from 2008-2012 before returning to the Kremlin.
Law changes in 2020 paved the way for him to run for additional terms, and on Friday he stated - as expected - his intention to compete in the country's presidential election.
The Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation passed a resolution indicating that voting in Russia will span three days - March 15, 16, and 17.
