World mourns as 200,000 gather for Pope Francis' farewell

The Vatican authorities report that approximately 200,000 people have gathered for Pope Francis' funeral. This number is more than attended the funeral of Benedict XVI but fewer than those who gathered for the farewell of John Paul II.

Many young Poles are participating in Saturday's funeral ceremonies for Pope Francis. White and red flags can be seen in St. Peter's Square, and the Polish language could be heard before the liturgy. For many, this is a very personal farewell to the Pope.

In the crowd of believers, many white and red flags can be seen. Among them are teachers and students from a Catholic school in Marki. "We want to say goodbye to our dear Pope Francis," they said.

Approximately 200,000 people are participating in Pope Francis' funeral at St. Peter's Square, as announced by the Vatican citing competent authorities.

Delegations from around the world in the Vatican

For comparison, around 50,000 believers attended Pope Benedict XVI's funeral in 2023, whereas approximately 300,000 people attended the funeral ceremonies for Pope John Paul II in 2005.
