Wicked sequel set to soar: 'For good' lands November 2025
"Wicked" has unexpectedly taken over the world of pop culture, and the musical's domination continues—even a month after its premiere. We already know some details about the next installment of the adaptation of the Broadway classic.
The premieres of "Wicked" and "Gladiator" didn't exactly create another Barbenheimer, but the cinematic debut of the musical certainly made an impact. It introduced stage productions to people who were previously uninterested and probably started a trend of bringing classic theatrical productions to the big screen again in a grand way: with a big budget, big stars, and actors who (finally) can really sing. Because that's what musicals are all about.
"Wicked" is not just highlighted by an outstanding role by Ariana Grande (seriously, I was shocked) or the excellent performance by Cynthia Erivo. It's also about Jonathan Bailey, who had the entire audience (a diverse crowd, I might add) sighing in unison, Jeff Goldblum (is anyone surprised about Elphaba's mom? Please...), and, of course, the original Glinda and Elphie straight from Broadway: Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth. Great songs, beautiful production, a lot of pop culture references (did you catch the "Shrek" one?), and, as a cherry on top, a conspiracy theory about Robbie Williams and his cameo as a flying monkey. Divine. And maximally queer, which is just an added advantage.
The film has turned out to be a gigantic hit, and the creators, predicting the impact it would have, immediately announced a sequel. The next instalment of "Wicked" will be released in 2025.
"Wicked: For Good" with an official release date!
The first part begins with joyful news—the Wicked Witch of the West is dead! However, on-screen, we only see Elphaba's triumphant escape, a great sense of hope, and a moving, heart-wrenching duet with Glinda.
The showdown between the "friends" and the Wizard is yet to unfold, and Universal has decided to lift the veil of mystery a bit and reveal when exactly "Wicked: For Good" will be released. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait almost a year for the film. The second part of the musical will premiere on November 21, 2025.
