WHO pushes China for answers on Covid-19 origins

The WHO is demanding information from China about the origins of the pandemic that began five years ago in Wuhan. "This is a moral and scientific imperative," wrote the World Health Organization in a statement.

The COVID-19 pandemic started five years ago, claiming over seven million lives and overwhelming healthcare systems worldwide.

WHO recalls that on December 31, 2019, its country office in China received a media statement from authorities in Wuhan regarding cases of "viral pneumonia" in the city. However, China has yet to provide data on the pandemic's origins.

"Without transparency, sharing, and co-operation among countries, the world cannot adequately prevent and prepare for future epidemics and pandemics," WHO urges.

The statement reads that WHO wants to "honor the lives changed and lost, recognize those who are suffering from Covid-19 and long Covid, express gratitude to the health workers who sacrificed so much to care for us, and commit to learning from Covid-19 to build a healthier tomorrow."
