White House challenges ICC over warrant threats against Netanyahu
There is a rising concern among Israeli officials due to reports suggesting the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague might issue an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other cabinet members. The White House has reacted to these allegations.
"We do not believe this falls within the ICC's jurisdiction and do not support this investigation," Jean-Pierre stated at a White House briefing on Monday.
This statement was in response to emerging reports that the ICC may issue arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Axios reported that Netanyahu voiced his concerns over this matter during a phone call with President Biden on Sunday. Axios also highlighted that, despite the absence of definitive information regarding the ICC's plans, the Court's prosecutor faces pressure from NGOs and certain member states. It is important to note that neither the USA nor Israel are ICC members.
"ICC actions could undermine US national security interests"
In response to these concerns, Netanyahu on Friday stated, "Israel will never accept any attempts by the ICC to undermine its right to self-defense."
On Monday, House Speaker Mike Johnson urged President Biden to oppose the Tribunal's efforts, arguing that they could "undermine the interests of US national security." He warned that silence from the White House might risk exposing American politicians, diplomats, and soldiers to similar allegations.
"The Biden administration must immediately and decisively demand the ICC to refrain from such actions, and the USA should utilize all available tools to prevent this outrage," Johnson emphasized in his statement.
