Western weapons: Crucial but not always decisive for Ukraine
Western military equipment does not always provide Ukraine with an advantage over Russia, even though it may seem technically superior. Comparing technical specifications is, however, not the best way to reach accurate conclusions.
While Western military equipment is often considered more technically advanced, it does not always give Ukraine a decisive edge over Russia. For instance, Abrams tanks, despite their reputation, have sustained losses on the Ukrainian front. General Waldemar Skrzypczak explained in an interview with Wirtualna Polska that no tank is indestructible, and the primary purpose of Abrams tanks is to protect the crew's lives.
Equipment without defense systems
The tanks provided to Ukraine lack active defense systems, making them susceptible to drone and anti-tank missile attacks. As a result, the Russians prioritize destroying these machines. Furthermore, the number of modern tanks like the Abrams or Leopard 2 is small compared to older models.
The true importance for the war lies with the hundreds of older tanks and combat vehicles supplied by countries like Poland or the Czech Republic in 2022. Deliveries of a dozen or several dozen tanks over many months have less impact on the outcome of the war.
The role of western support
Western support, while not always involving the latest technology, is crucial for Ukraine. For example, the HIMARS missile launchers significantly affected Russian logistics in 2022. Likewise, the Starlink satellite internet has given Ukraine an informational edge.
Even when the technical superiority of Western equipment is clear, as in the case of artillery, it does not always result in a combat advantage. Effective use of equipment requires proper reconnaissance, which is effectively hindered by Russian aviation.
Long-term support as the key to success
Does this mean Western weapons have no role in helping Ukrainians build an advantage on the front line? It depends. The war in Ukraine has demonstrated that Western weapons influence battles (through resources like Starlink, Storm Shadow missiles, etc.). Nonetheless, when assessing the effectiveness of Western weapons in Ukraine, it's essential to note that these are often not the latest designs.
