Warner Bros. Discovery to reboot 'Harry Potter' series, expecting 2026 release on Max platform
WarnerMedia, the owner of the Harry Potter films' rights, has been hinting at their plans to heavily invest in expanding the "Hogwarts universe". Their first project was a game show named "Harry Potter: Tournament of Houses". This platform, formerly known as HBO GO, allowed fans to demonstrate their knowledge of the wizarding world. Following this, viewers could watch the anniversary program titled "Harry Potter's 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts" amongst other things.
Despite more than 12 years passing since the movie premiere of the final part of the iconic series ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II"), the "Potter" films remain exceedingly popular on the streaming service. These films about the Hogwarts' wizard draw repeated viewings from fans.
Zaslav, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, readily acknowledges that the "Harry Potter" franchise is of prime importance to their streaming service. "Our excitement is uncontainable (...). Much time has been spent with J.K. Rowling and her team. We're all ecstatic about the opportunity to rejuvenate the series. We eagerly anticipate sharing the fruits of our labor with fans globally," revealed Zaslav.
Expected to be a major hit on Max
The "Harry Potter" series is slated to air on the Max platform (still referred to as HBO Max in Poland). Planned for seven seasons, each will adapt a different book from J.K. Rowling's popular fantasy series. Of course, the actors from the film series will not make appearances.
The series premiere is earmarked for 2026. Analysts predict that the release of the "Harry Potter" series could potentially see the Max/HBO Max user base doubling on the day of its premiere.
