As the investigation progressed, it was revealed that the 36-year-old had attempted to mislead security personnel at the airport, concealing his true motives, as reported by "Ukrainian Truth".
After evaluating the situation and following appropriate security measures, the citizens of the Russian Federation were prohibited from entering Moldova. Subsequently, he was taken into custody by police officers.
The tense situation in Transnistria
Transnistria is a self-declared republic within Moldova's territory, not recognized by the majority of the international community, including Russia. Despite this, Tiraspol maintains strong ties with Moscow, and Russian military forces are present in the region.
Relations between Chisinau and Tiraspol have soured, especially after 2020, following the election of pro-Western Maia Sandu as President of Moldova. In early 2024, Moldova introduced tariffs on goods destined for Transnistria.
Recently, Tiraspol's so-called Congress of Deputies sought assistance from Russia, asking for "protective measures for Transnistria against the mounting pressure from Moldova". The separatists claim that their region is being economically isolated by Chisinau.
The constant presence of over 220,000 Russian citizens in Transnistria, the successful history of Russian peacekeeping efforts along the Dniester, and Russia's role as a mediator and guarantor in negotiations were highlighted as key considerations in their appeal.
