Vladimir Putin nominated for Time's Person of the Year

The American magazine, Time, has unveiled the nominees for Person of the Year 2023. The list includes notable figures such as King Charles III, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and an unexpected choice - the Barbie doll, along with Vladimir Putin.

Time magazine's list of nominees for Person of the Year 2023 maintains a tradition that dates back to 1927. The title is given to "the person, group, or concept that has had the most significant impact on the world in the last 12 months". It is awarded according to the jury's opinion of who or what has graced the headlines, for better or worse, as indicated on the magazine's website.

In 2022, the Person of the Year title was awarded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This year, surprisingly, his major adversary - Vladimir Putin - has been nominated.

"Vladimir Putin, who has held power in Russia since 1999 alternately as prime minister and president, relentlessly continues his war in Ukraine, now in its second year. In 2023, Putin's rule was briefly challenged by a revolt from the Wagner Group, but his rule solidified further when the mercenary group withdrew following an agreement with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Later, the leader of the Wagner group, Evgeny Prigozhin, tragically perished in an air disaster. In 2007, Putin was named Person of the Year, and he also frequently appears on Time's 100 most influential people's list," states the nominee description.

Other nominees for the esteemed title include: participants in the Hollywood actors and workers strike, Chinese President Xi Jinping, celebrated singer Taylor Swift, prosecutors who indicted Donald Trump, King Charles III, Chair of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell, and quite unexpectedly, the Barbie doll. The doll was nominated after a movie about it became the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros history.

Time magazine's announcement for Person of the Year 2023 will be made on Wednesday.
