The United States will start sporadic deployment of long-range fire capability in Germany in 2026 as part of planning for future permanent stationing of these assets. SM-6 missiles, Tomahawks, and still-developing hypersonic weapons, which will have "significantly greater range" than currently deployed missiles, are to be stationed in Germany.
Biden on NATO spending
Currently, Russia's economy is operating in a wartime mode regarding arms production, and it is doing so with the help of China, North Korea, and Iran.
"We cannot allow the alliance to fall behind" said Biden, opening the first North Atlantic Council meeting session at the NATO summit.
"I'm very pleased that today, all NATO members are making the pledge to expand our industrial base and our industrial capacity, like our defense spending commitment. This is a critical step to maintaining our security. The first time ever every NATO nation is pledging to develop plans for defense production at home."
Biden added that during the deliberations, leaders must answer, "How can we strengthen our shield?" Strengthening the industry is one answer.
Appearing before him, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that on Wednesday, the Council would address increasing long-term military support for Ukraine, including establishing a command to coordinate supplies and training for the Ukrainian army.
"Support to Ukraine is not charity. It is in our own security interest" said Stoltenberg.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is participating in the Alliance leaders' meeting for the first time.
