US Navy admiral warns of danger as critical aid to Ukraine gets stalled in Congress
"The situation becomes critical when decisive battles for the Ukraine war's outcome occur not in Kiev, but in Washington," Stavridis noted during the "Cats Roundtable" radio program, hosted by American billionaire, John Catsimatidis, on Sunday.
Stavridis noted that throughout the Ukrainian war, half of the Russian army had been decimated without one American soldier being killed, or even put at risk. He emphasized that the Ukrainian army achieved this with merely the "equivalent of 5 percent" of the US's annual defense budget.
"We are able to afford it and we should. Hence, my concern about the Ukrainian war rises only when the US and our European allies fail to honor the commitments we made to support Ukraine," added the military officer.
Aid Decision Expected in 2024
As Congress will likely not reassemble before the New Year, talks concerning a Ukrainian aid package will be delayed until 2024.
Multiple Ukrainian officials have begged Washington for assistance, stressing their impending defense issues.
President Biden proposed to Congress a guarantee of 61 billion dollars in aid for Ukraine. However, these funds are currently withheld, as Republican congressmen have stated that they won't endorse the package until significant decisions are made about migrant issues at the southern US border.
The White House gave a warning that military aid funds for Ukraine will deplete by December 30. Nevertheless, it remains doubtful that congressmen will return from their holiday break before this date.
