US chooses not to back UN resolution on Ukraine crisis
The US has decided not to join the UN resolution marking the third anniversary of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, according to Reuters, which cited three diplomatic sources. The draft resolution supports Ukraine's territorial integrity and condemns the Russian invasion.
According to Reuters, the U.S. decision highlights an increasing rift between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump aims for a quick resolution to the war in Ukraine, with his team engaging in negotiations with Russia without Kyiv's involvement.
The draft resolution obtained by the agency condemns Russian aggression and reaffirms the commitment to "the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders."
In previous years, the US has co-initiated such resolutions to show support for a just peace in Ukraine, one source told Reuters.
According to another source, more than 50 countries are co-initiators of the resolution. "Currently, the situation is such that the US will not sign it," another source said. Reuters noted that Washington can still change its decision on this matter.
The spokesperson for the US diplomatic mission at the United Nations in Geneva has not yet responded to the agency's request for comment.
