Why is the USA attacking the fuel port in Yemen?
The American Air Force targeted a fuel port in western Yemen to deprive the Houthi rebels of fuel supply sources. "Today, US forces took action to eliminate this source of fuel for the Iran-backed Houthi terrorists and deprive them of illegal revenue that has funded Houthi efforts to terrorise the entire region for over 10 years. The objective of these strikes was to degrade the economic source of power of the Houthis, who continue to exploit and bring great pain upon their fellow countrymen," stated the US Central Command (CENTCOM) in a message posted on platform X. The Pentagon has not commented on the casualty information.
What are the effects of the attacks on the Houthis?
According to sources close to the rebels, the attack resulted in 38 deaths and 102 injuries. The United States began large-scale operations against the Houthis last month, announcing that they will continue until the rebels cease their attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
In early April, the Pentagon reported that the USA had carried out over 200 airstrikes on the Houthis. Government representatives also stated that many rebel leaders were killed in these strikes. In response, the Houthis reported attacking American naval ships in the region, including the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier stationed in the Red Sea. The USA has not confirmed these reports.
The Houthis claim that their actions are a protest against Israel's war in the Gaza Strip and are intended to support the Palestinians.
