For millennia, traditional Eastern medicine has utilized magnolia as a remedy against depression and anxiety. The bark is the most commonly used part of the plant for its herbal benefits, though the buds and flowers are edible, too. Magnolia's flowering season, from March to May, is the perfect time to highlight this plant's versatility. A notable use of its flowers is in crafting a healthy and tasty syrup, which my mother prepares annually.
Health benefits of magnolia
Magnolia's unique chemical makeup offers a plethora of health benefits. It provides a relaxing and soothing effect, aids in falling asleep, and enhances sleep quality. Additionally, it can lower blood sugar levels and regulate carbohydrate and fat metabolism.
The plant possesses antispasmodic properties that benefit the smooth muscles of the digestive system, alleviating various gastrointestinal problems. Magnolia can also relieve shortness of breath due to allergic reactions by dilating the bronchi, thus easing the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
Rich in antioxidants, magnolia bark combats free radicals, which accelerate the body's aging process. It also has anti-atherosclerotic properties, which prevent the formation of plaques in arteries, safeguarding against cardiovascular disease.
Magnolia flowers: What do they help with?

How to consume magnolia?

Having magnolia flower syrup handy is beneficial for those with sleep issues. To make the syrup, you'll need two cups of magnolia petals, 1.05 quarts of water, and two cups of sugar. Chop the flowers, cover them with boiling water, and let them cool. Strain the infusion, mix in the sugar, and heat until the sugar has dissolved and the syrup thickens. Store the syrup in a sterilized bottle. It's delightful with tea or diluted in water.
