Unleash walnut’s power: Secret trick makes shelling easy

Walnuts ripen at the end of September, and the best time for harvesting is October. They are an invaluable ingredient in many dishes, a great addition to salads, cakes, or simply a healthy snack. However, they do have one downside—they’re surrounded by a thick, hard shell.

If you have a nutcracker at home, it's time to dig it out from the drawer in the fall and start shelling. However, this is quite a time-consuming task that requires a lot of strength, and not everyone has the special equipment. You could, of course, throw the nuts into a plastic bag and smash them with a mallet, but digging out the pieces from among little shell bits isn’t much fun either. Fortunately, there's a completely different trick that helps you effortlessly handle a whole bag of walnuts.

Go for walnuts

Walnuts are very popular in our cuisine, not only because of their flavor but also for their health benefits. They are a true treasure trove of nutrients. They contain vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants. These ingredients support cardiovascular health, help maintain proper cholesterol levels, and support brain health.

Walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which support both heart and brain function. Regular consumption can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. In addition, they can improve memory and concentration, making them an ideal dietary component for older adults.

How to crack walnuts?

Walnuts and a nutcracker are an inseparable pair. Cracking walnuts requires a lot of patience, but you can make this task easier by boiling them in salted water. Boiling them for half an hour will soften the hard shells, saving you considerable effort.

You also don’t have to search for a nutcracker afterward. After soaking and thoroughly drying the nuts, gently heat them in a dry pan. The heat will cause the shells to crack, making it easier to extract the best part.

How to use walnut shells?

Walnut shells often end up in the trash, but it's worth knowing that they can be used in various ways. To achieve an intense color, pour boiling water over the shells and let them sit for about an hour. Then, strain the infusion and rinse your hair thoroughly with it. For an even deeper hue, repeat the rinse. It’s a natural way to enhance the color for brunettes and dark-haired individuals.
