During a recent United Airlines flight on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, an unexpected event occurred: a fuselage panel detached mid-flight. This issue only came to light after the plane, carrying 139 passengers and six crew members, safely arrived at its destination in Medford, Oregon, from San Francisco.
Remarkably, the missing fuselage panel was discovered during a routine inspection following the flight's completion. It's notable that this aircraft has been in use since 1998, raising questions about its maintenance and monitoring processes.
In response to this incident, United Airlines has committed to a comprehensive investigation, stating to NBC, "We will conduct a thorough examination of the aircraft and perform all necessary repairs before it returns to service." Additionally, both the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are conducting their own inquiries to pinpoint the cause of the damage.
This event adds to a growing list of concerns with Boeing aircraft. Just last week, a Boeing 737 MAX experienced a runway mishap at George Bush Airport in Houston. Following a January 5th incident, where a panel near the emergency exit door on a Boeing 737 MAX 9, operated by Alaska Airlines, detached mid-flight, Boeing is under scrutiny. Seattle's manufacturing giant is currently subject to thorough inspections to investigate its safety standards and manufacturing quality.
