The commitment comes after a United flight en route from San Francisco to Medford, Oregon, raised alarms when it was discovered to have a missing panel on its fuselage. This incident adds to a growing list of recent mishaps at United, including a flight that lost a rear tire during takeoff in San Francisco and another that veered off the runway in Memphis, Tennessee, ending in a grassy area.

Addressing these issues, Kirby sent a letter to customers early Monday, acknowledging the spate of incidents and emphasizing the airline's commitment to safety. These incidents follow heightened concerns over aircraft safety following a January incident involving an Alaska Airlines flight that suffered a mid-flight blowout of a door panel. This has led to increased scrutiny and worries among passengers about airlines' safety standards.
To address these concerns and bolster confidence among travelers, United Airlines is implementing several changes to enhance safety protocols. Kirby outlined initiatives such as introducing an additional day of in-person training for all pilots starting in May and a new, centralized training curriculum for newly hired maintenance technicians. These steps are part of a broader effort to refine the airline's safety training and procedures, ensuring that every employee, from pilots to ground staff, is equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain the highest safety standards.
