On Saturday, February 24th, Kira Yarmysh, the spokesperson for Navalny, announced via social media that his body has been returned to his mother, Ludmila.
Yarmysh added that Ludmila is in Salekhard, a city around 31 miles away from the penal colony. This is where the dissident's remains were supposed to be transported.
Images of Navalny's disturbing cell have once again made their way online. The photo shows an old sink and a makeshift bed consisting of planks.
Within the cell, Navalny had access to an old mattress and a table. A small window is noticeable, hardly allowing any light inside.
"The thought that people, including us, did very little or nothing at all to keep Alexei free, haunts me," expresses a net user. "I sincerely hope that one day Vladimir Putin, after a fair trial, spends his days in such a cell," adds another.
Alexei Navalny dies in penal colony
On Friday, February 16th, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia announced that Navalny had died suddenly at Penal Colony no. 3 in Khar. According to Russian reports, Navalny "felt unwell after a walk and lost consciousness almost immediately". The prison services claim that Navalny died despite the efforts made to revive him and his immediate medical attention.
Alexei Navalny is survived by his two children, 23-year-old Dasha (Daria - ed.) and 16-year-old Zakhar. His daughter, a law student at Stanford University in California, is openly vocal about her views, much like her late father.
