An integral part of maintaining a freezer, unsurprisingly, is defrosting it. But how do you do this? Begin by checking for a specific mechanism.
Differentiating Between Older and Newer Freezers
Why should you regularly defrost your freezer? The reasons are straightforward. Frost build-up on the walls, ill-fitted doors, and icy residue on the contents are more than just aesthetic issues. Such conditions cause your appliance to consume more energy and increase the chances of a breakdown. Luckily, modern freezers with the "no frost" feature inhibit ice formation and frost on the walls. However, other appliances without this feature need the preventive step mentioned above.
Defrosting your freezer starts with removing all the food, shelves, and drawers then disconnecting the power. Look for a valve or funnel at the bottom of the unit. Open this, as it's where the excess water will drain. Placing a container beneath this outlet is advisable–something flat like an oven tray would be ideal.
Gather the melted ice, wipe down the appliance until it's dry, and then start it up again. Experts recommend executing this procedure at least once every three months!
