UN budget cut: 6,900 jobs at risk amid US funding slash

The UN is considering laying off 6,900 employees and reducing its budget by 20%. This decision follows financial cutbacks from the USA, a major sponsor of the organization, as an effort to adapt to the new financial circumstances.

The UN faces serious financial challenges after the Trump administration limited American contributions. According to Germany's "Die Welt," the organization is planning layoffs and budget cuts to adjust to the new financial realities. Contributions from the USA have accounted for nearly a quarter of the UN's budget.

Based on an internal memorandum obtained by Reuters, the UN plans to cut its budget by $3.7 billion.

Employees have been asked to submit savings proposals by June 13. The cuts are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, is also considering restructuring the organization, which may include merging departments and relocating offices to more cost-effective locations.

He emphasizes that the UN faces tough decisions that cannot be delayed.
