The British are faced with the challenge of meeting the ambitious zero-emission targets set by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This entails replacing traditional gas boilers with heat pumps and transitioning to electric cars. The Prime Minister announced at the COP29 climate summit a goal of reducing emissions by 81% by 2035.
Heat pumps and electric cars as the key to success
According to express.co.uk, Pinchbeck from the climate change committee warns that a green energy network alone will not suffice to meet government goals by 2035. The introduction of technologies that enable the use of clean energy at home is essential. The "secret weapon" for the next decade is expected to be heat pumps and electric vehicles.
It was previously suggested that heat pumps should be installed in one million homes annually by 2030. Last year, about 61,000 were installed. Conservatives caution that the Labour Party's promises may lead to "sacrifices and difficulties," requiring the phase-out of high-carbon footprint products and gasoline and diesel vehicles.
Claire Coutinho, the energy secretary, questions these plans, emphasizing that the UK accounts for just 1% of global emissions.
