Ukrainian sea drones strike back, damage Russian assets
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has revealed details about an operation using the Ukrainian Sea Baby maritime drones, reminding us of their capabilities. These drones successfully damaged Russian helicopters, airplanes, and patrol boats and also struck a barge carrying military equipment and bridge repair tools in Crimea.
"On the night of December 5-6, the SBU Sea Baby drone group engaged in combat with Russian helicopters, airplanes, and Raptor patrol boats that attempted to intercept them. (...) Russian pilots thought they were the hunters, expecting an easy target, but they became the prey when the maritime drones fired back," the statement said.
Sea Baby drone attack on Russians
Besides the statement, a dramatic video of the clash between Ukrainian Sea Baby drones and Russian forces was posted on social media.
The SBU reported that Sea Baby drones were equipped with large-caliber machine guns, which used automatic targeting and identification programs. They also attacked a barge carrying military equipment and devices needed for repairs on the Crimean bridge, which the Russians are trying to reconstruct after attacks by Ukrainian special forces.
"Intercepted Russian radio messages indicate that there are dead and injured on board the helicopters. The helicopters themselves have been seriously damaged and now require extensive repairs," the SBU conveyed.
Sea Baby drones: A menace for Russians
The Sea Baby platform is multifunctional and can be equipped with a variety of weapons, including multiple-launch rocket systems, flying drones, and large-caliber machine guns. The SBU emphasizes that it has once again proven its effectiveness in clashes with the invaders.
Sea Baby drones have been in use for many months. They are considered some of the most significant threats to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The drones, also equipped with day and thermal imaging cameras, are continuously upgraded, and new versions offer even greater capabilities. As reported by Karolina Modzelewska, a journalist for Wirtualna Polska, the new version of Sea Baby, unveiled in March this year, has improved technical parameters, combat capabilities, and maneuverability and can operate within a range of up to 621 miles. It is also capable of carrying up to 2,205 pounds of explosives.
