Ukrainian jammers thwart Russian glide bombs, dilute "wonder weapon" advantage

Ukrainian jamming systems are effectively neutralizing Russian glide bombs, often referred to as "wonder weapons," reports Forbes, citing Russian reports from the Russian Fighterbomber channel on Telegram. This eliminates a key Russian advantage on the front.

The Ukrainian armed forces are successfully disrupting the operation of Russian glide bombs, significantly weakening their effectiveness on the front line. According to Forbes, Russian KAB and UMPK bombs, which were previously considered "wonder weapons," now often miss their targets due to radio interference. Even the Russians are noticing this.

The effectiveness of Ukrainian jamming

Russian glide bombs, which were once a key element of front-line strategy, are now losing significance. Ukrainian radio jamming prevents the bombs from communicating with GLONASS satellites, leading to inaccurate drops. Forbes emphasizes that Ukrainian jamming systems are so effective that the Russians need to use up to 16 bombs to hit a single target.

"The bombs are still flying, but there's a catch," reads the Fighterbomber channel on Telegram. "Ukrainian radio jammers have become so effective and numerous that they saturate the front line," explain the Russians.

As the channel operators report, Ukrainians have equipped all high-value targets with electronic warfare systems, making effective strikes by Russia very difficult. The Russian Federation's army needs up to 16 glide bombs to reliably hit a target.

Ukrainian technological advantages

The Ukrainian armed forces use American and French glide bombs, which are resistant to jamming thanks to inertial navigation systems. Forbes notes that these systems are completely independent of external signals, giving Ukraine an advantage on the battlefield.

To clarify, the bombs with which the Russians are having problems due to Ukrainian jamming, namely the KAB series weapons, are designed in various configurations characterized by different equipment and mass. These bombs are an evolution of the FAB-500 model and offer a wide range of applications in combat operations. One of the available variants, the KAB-500L, features an advanced laser-guiding system and contains about 1,000 pounds of explosives. Such bombs are crucial in increasing operational effectiveness, making them a desirable upgrade in the combat arsenal.
