Many of the reports by Russian media and authorities are part of propaganda. Such information is part of the information war conducted by the Russian Federation.

A Ukrainian offensive is ongoing in the Kursk region of Russia. The actions were initiated in several areas of the front simultaneously. According to Ukrainian media, Russian units were completely surprised by the Ukrainians' actions.

"The Russians are very concerned in the Kursk region because they were attacked from multiple directions, and it came as a surprise to them. The defense forces are in action," stated Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Opposing Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council, on Telegram.

There are also initial recordings of Ukrainian activities appearing online. The footage shows a Russian drone attempting to attack a Ukrainian vehicle during the assault. However, the Ukrainians were well-prepared as the vehicle was equipped with electronic warfare measures.

"The Russians claim that Ukrainian forces are very well prepared for offensive actions concerning electronic warfare systems," reported expert Artur Micek.

Russia admits to Ukrainian offensive in Kursk

The Russian Ministry of Defense commented on the Ukrainians' actions in the region, referring to them merely as a "counterattack."

"On January 5th, at about 1:00 AM Eastern Time, to prevent the advance of Russian troops towards Kursk, the enemy launched a counterattack by an assault group consisting of two tanks, an engineering vehicle, and 12 armored combat vehicles with paratroopers towards the village of Berdin."

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that supposedly, the artillery and aviation of the "North" group crushed the Ukrainian Armed Forces' assault group.

Russian Telegram channels assert that the target of the Ukrainian offensive is the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. "The Ukrainians are allegedly trying to break through to it to subsequently seize it and use it for negotiations regarding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant," informs Polish military analyst Artur Micek.
