The Oncilla vehicles have earned high praise from Ukrainian forces. Despite their commendation, reports from the front rarely mention them, partly because of their limited numbers. As of early March 2024, the manufacturer Mista announced the production of only the hundredth Oncilla vehicle for Ukraine. The exact number of these vehicles sent to the conflict zone remains undisclosed.
Oncilla from Poland in Ukraine
The Oncilla boasts a remotely controlled combat module with a shooting position on its roof, equipped with a 12.7 mm calibre NSW machine gun. In practice, a single soldier operates this module, while the vehicle's crew also includes a commander and a driver. Additionally, its spacious interior can accommodate six more occupants.
A spokesperson from the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine's Ministry of Defense mentioned in an earlier interview that the Oncilla carriers "have performed admirably in battle and have been instrumental in saving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers".
What protection does the Oncilla vehicle offer?
Spanning nearly 18 feet in length and 8.2 feet in width, the Oncilla comes with armor that meets the STANAG 4569 level 2 standard. This level of protection shields occupants from 7.62×39 mm bullets and shields against explosive charges of up to about 13 pounds under any wheel.
Produced in Poland, the Oncilla is outfitted with several noteworthy features, including a thermal imaging camera for operations under challenging light conditions, advanced communication and satellite navigation systems, and an automatic firefighting system.
In action, the vehicle's performance is enhanced not only by its potent engine, offering 190 HP or 209 HP depending on the model, but also by its 4x4 drive and considerable ground clearance. Additionally, the Oncilla comes equipped with a self-protection winch capable of pulling up to about 15,000 pounds, further contributing to its utility in the field.
