The explosion happened in the Krasnodar Krai, located in southern Russia. The oil depot has been burning since the attack on March 19. This information was reported by the "Moscow Times," citing a statement from local authorities on Telegram. Due to the explosion, two firefighters sustained injuries.

Spread of the fire

The explosion caused the fire to spread to another tank, increasing the fire area to about 2.5 acres. "During the extinguishing process, due to depressurisation of the burning tank, there was an explosion of oil products and release of burning oil," reported the operational headquarters. A total of 456 firefighters and 181 units of equipment are involved in the firefighting efforts.

Significance of the Caucasus Station

Initially, the fire covered only about 24 square feet. The oil depot is part of the Caucasus Station, which facilitates the transfer of crude oil from railway tanks to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) pipeline system. Annually, approximately 6.6 million tons of crude oil are pumped through this route. The fuel reaches a terminal in Novorossiysk, from where it is exported by sea.
