Ukraine's frontline freedom: How murderers swap cells for war in Wagner Group gamble

The Wagner Group, previously led by the late Yevgeny Prigozhin, recruited prisoners to serve in the Ukraine conflict. Most of these individuals were sent to the front lines without adequate training, often treated as expendable resources.

Nevertheless, some soldiers did find a new chance at life thanks to the Wagner Group. After surviving half a year in the war, they earned their freedom. Gieorgij Poviłajko is a case in point, having been sentenced to 24 years in prison for his crimes against Anna Koszulko.

After more than a year in prison, Poviłajko was dispatched to Ukraine. A few months later, he returned home. Upon seeing him in the neighborhood, Anna Koszulko's widower pursued legal action against Poviłajko, demanding his reinstatement as an inmate.

The Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia stated in their letter that the offender was conditionally released on October 27, 2023, on terms of a contract with the Ministry of Defense, Belsat TV emphasized on social media.

Abandoned Wagner Mercenaries

Members of the Wagner Group are not living an easy life, though. A few weeks ago, one of them described his tragic experiences after returning from the war in Ukraine. Joining the troops from prison, he fought for his country and its president, Vladimir Putin. Now, after being wounded and abandoned, he directs his grievances towards Putin. None of the promises from the authorities have been fulfilled to date.

As he recalls, he was gravely injured, costing him one eye and requiring surgery on the other. Today, he receives no state pension, has no job, and sees no prospects for his future. All this despite being willing to risk his life for his country.

Following the demise of Yevgeny Prigozhin, significant changes are expected for mercenaries. Although they can still serve their country worldwide, they now operate under new conditions. Some have consented and are now serving in a unit that is part of the Rosguard.
