Ukraine's 'Bars' missile: A game-changer in regional defense

The Ukrainian Bars missile is a new, enigmatic weapon showcased by Minister Herman Smetanin on April 11. Although the technical details are still under wraps, it is known to be the product of private manufacturers, rather than state-owned factories. The missile falls into the category of "missile-drones," meaning it combines features of both a missile and a drone. The BBC has obtained details regarding the specifications of this secretive weapon.

New capabilities for Ukrainian defense

Bars has a range of approximately 435 to 500 miles, classifying it as a medium-range weapon. Its main advantage is the potential for mass production in Ukraine, enabling regular strikes on targets deep inside Russia. This modern solution may be challenging for missile defense systems to intercept.

The BBC reminds us that in 2024 Ukraine significantly increased missile production by introducing new models like "Pekło," "Palianycia," and "Ruta." Each of these has unique features, but "Bars" is notable for its ability to be mass-produced and its substantial range. This could greatly enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities.

As reported, Bars is categorized as a weapon that bridges the gap between a traditional cruise missile and a drone. According to BBC findings, the new weapon features a warhead weighing 110-220 pounds and is powered by a small turbojet engine. This allows it to rapidly reach its designated target, making it a difficult target for enemy air defenses. Bars can be launched from both ground platforms and aircraft.

Development of the Ukrainian defense industry

The BBC also notes that in August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered additional funding for missile development. Consequently, Ukraine is working on several projects aimed at enhancing the country's defensive and offensive capabilities, including the modernization of the Neptune missile and new models that can be used for both attacks and reconnaissance.
