  • Ukraine plans to purchase 10 Patriot systems: President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Kyiv's intention to acquire at least 10 Patriot air defense systems from the United States.
  • Talks with the USA and Europe: Zelensky is engaged in discussions with US President Donald Trump and European countries about purchasing these costly systems.
  • Increase in Russian attacks: Zelensky is appealing for more Patriot systems in response to the rise in air attacks from Russia.

What are the costs of acquiring Patriot systems?

During a press conference, President Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's readiness to purchase at least 10 Patriot systems. He has been in talks on this issue with US President Donald Trump, who declared that the US would participate in addressing the matter. "Ukraine is ready to buy at least 10 systems. I discussed this minimum with President Trump during our phone call. He told me that America would work on this," said Zelensky. The cost of exporting a single Patriot battery can reach up to 2.5 billion dollars, and each missile costs about 10 million dollars.

Why does Ukraine need more Patriot systems?

Zelensky has appealed to Ukraine's allies for additional Patriot systems in response to the rising number of Russian air attacks. In a video address to the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, President Zelensky underscored Ukraine’s urgent need for additional Patriot air defence systems. Over the past three years, the country has received several such batteries from allies, including the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania.

The President of Ukraine highlighted that he is also holding separate talks with European countries, as the purchase of Patriot systems is significantly expensive, noting that negotiations are ongoing.
