The conflict in Ukraine has been raging for two years, leaving soldiers who have spent many months on the front lines exhausted and without replacements. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyy, the newly appointed commander of the Ukrainian army, announced on Thursday that despite the hardships, they have initiated the process of rotating units and subunits on the front line.

"Despite the challenging situation across the entire front, we've started rotating soldiers. Units and subunits that have been on combat duty for an extended period will be replaced," Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyy, the chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated on Thursday.

"This initiative will help stabilize the front-line situation and boost our soldiers' morale. In my role, I've made all the necessary decisions to enhance the fighting capability of our brigades," Syrskyy highlighted in a Facebook post.

On Wednesday, Syrskyy acknowledged the challenging operational conditions on the eastern front, with the adversary's forces launching offensives near the towns of Terny, Iwaniwsk, Berdyansk, and Toneńk in the Donetsk region, as well as Verbove and Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. “The threat of Russian troops making significant inroads into our defences is growing,” the general cautioned.

The Ukrainian army faces a personnel shortage

In February, the Washington Post revealed that the Ukrainian military grapples with a critical infantry shortage, leading to widespread exhaustion and plummeting morale. Interviews with frontline soldiers revealed the severe impact of harsh weather conditions and relentless bombardments on mental health. “People are worn out both mentally and physically,” one soldier remarked.

This year, Ukraine aims to conscript approximately 500,000 recruits, with 330,000 intended to join the rotation and relieve those on the front lines. However, the proposed draft legislation has sparked controversy, as highlighted by the Financial Times on Wednesday.
