Ukraine deploys silent robot dogs for reconnaissance and logistics

The Ukrainian army plans to include modern robot dogs to support soldiers during dangerous missions. These machines will be used for reconnaissance in Russian trenches and mine detection. Additionally, they can carry ammunition or medical supplies, significantly increasing military efficiency, reports AFP.

The robot model named "BAD One" can stand up, squat, run, and jump based on the operator's commands. AFP journalists who attended the demonstration in Ukraine described the robot's skills. Ukrainian media also published a video showcasing its operation. The video can be viewed on social media:

The creators of these robots emphasize their quiet operation, high maneuverability, and small height. Due to these features, robot dogs are difficult to detect, making them ideal for reconnaissance missions. They are equipped with thermal cameras, allowing inspection of enemy trenches and building interiors in combat zones. Additionally, they can carry loads up to 15 pounds.

The presented four-legged robot model is equipped with a battery that allows about two hours of operation. In the event of capture by Russians, the operator can immediately delete all data from the machine.

A more advanced model known as "BAD Two" was not showcased for security reasons. AFP reports that Ukrainians do not disclose the number of robot dogs deployed on the front line.

Robot dogs in the military

Here are some applications of robot dogs in the military:

  1. Reconnaissance and information gathering: Robot dogs can be equipped with cameras, sensors, and other devices that allow data collection from the battlefield without risking human lives. They can navigate difficult terrain that would be dangerous or challenging for soldiers.
  2. Transport and logistical support: Some robot dogs are designed to carry equipment, ammunition, or supplies on the battlefield. They can move autonomously or be remotely controlled, delivering resources where they are most needed.
  3. Combat support: Robot dogs can also be armed and used in direct combat activities. Thanks to their autonomy and ability to move quickly, they can provide fire support or even attack enemy positions.
  4. Explosive ordnance disposal: In some cases, robot dogs can be used to detect and neutralize improvised explosive devices (IEDs), one of the key tasks in counterinsurgency operations.

Robot dogs are used by many armies worldwide, including the forces of the United States and Israel. Their main advantage is operating in conditions where humans would not survive. Like many other military technologies, robot dogs also raise controversies due to their use on the battlefield. These discussions particularly concern the high costs of such machines and potential risks arising from their autonomous operation.
