Ukraine deploys new ADAM mines to thwart Russian assaults

As reported by the Ukrainian portal Defense Express, the Ukrainian army has received new support in the form of ADAM (Area Denial Artillery Munition) anti-personnel mines, which are already being used against Russian forces. This weapon is designed to counter Russian "human wave" attacks.

In the fall of 2024, reports began circulating on social media that the Ukrainian armed forces would receive new support against these Russian attacks. Initially, there was talk of unspecified anti-personnel mines to be provided by the United States. It is now confirmed that the Pentagon has delivered 155-mm artillery shells containing ADAM mines to Ukraine. This is substantiated by photos published online, marking the first appearance of ADAMs on the front in Ukraine.

Modern ADAM mines in the hands of Ukrainian soldiers

ADAM mines were first observed with soldiers from the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo. OSINT analysts note that these are M692 projectiles, containing 36 M67 anti-personnel mines. There is also an M731 variant, which contains 36 M72 mines. The M72 variant is characterized by a short self-destruction delay of 48 hours, whereas the M67 variant self-destructs after four hours.

The aforementioned anti-personnel mines are fired from an American M109 self-propelled howitzer, allowing the projectiles to achieve a range of nearly 11 miles.

Anti-personnel mines are intended to maim or eliminate enemy units. Upon landing, the projectile releases wires that trigger the activation of the mines. The mine is detonated using electrical current, and when the battery charge drops below a certain level, the weapon self-destructs.

If a malfunction occurs and the mine fails to self-destruct, the battery of this ammunition will completely discharge after 14 days, rendering the mine inactive. A single M692/M731 projectile weighs just under 110 pounds and measures approximately 35 inches.
