Ukraine boosts defense with German "drone slayer" Skynex system

The German government shares details of the military support extended to Ukraine each month. The April update highlights that the aid includes additional Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles, technical vehicles, assorted handheld weapons, ammunition, and 155mm caliber artillery shells alongside the Skynex system. Remarkably, this is only the second instance of such an air defense system being supplied to the Ukrainian forces engaged in combat with Russian forces.

Ukraine has received the Skynex air defense system

The inclusion of another Skynex system is anticipated to bolster Ukrainian defenses significantly. Ukraine has continuously called on the West for additional air defense systems, especially those tailored to counteract drones, which are extensively used in the ongoing conflict.

The Skynex system's effectiveness is largely attributed to its Oerlikon Revolver Gun Mk3, a 35mm caliber gun capable of firing up to 1,000 rounds per minute. With a reach of approximately 2.5 miles, it offers a robust defense against drone swarms, particularly due to its programming to detonate before reaching the target. This mechanism disperses tungsten submunitions to broaden the impact area, enhancing its efficacy against aerial threats.

Another significant advantage is the system's mobility; the gun can be mounted on a truck, facilitating quick repositioning to safeguard various locations. The Skynex, however, is more than just the gun; it encompasses a command center and radar, which can also be mounted on different platforms for versatility. The radar's effective range varies with the target type, extending to approximately 31 miles.

As a CIWS (Close-In Weapon System) class system, Skynex serves as a crucial last line of defense against incoming threats. Its operation as an artillery system presents a cost-effective alternative to missile systems like the Patriot, particularly for drone defense.
