The warning for tourists was issued by the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), among others.

All due to increased terrorist attacks in recent years

The reason for these warnings is the numerous attacks that have occurred in the region in recent years. In October 2023, two Swedish citizens were shot in Brussels. A year earlier, during an attack there, a policeman was killed, and another was injured.

In 2023, similar tragedies also occurred in Germany. A knife attack in the town of Solingen resulted in three fatalities and several injured. In 2021, five people were attacked with a knife on a train in Bavaria.

Germany is protecting Christmas markets this year

The German newspaper "Bild" assured readers at the end of November that this year, the Christmas markets in Germany will have the highest security measures in history.

As part of the security package at all public events in Germany, carrying knives is prohibited. The markets are also protected with barriers and modern features like concrete blocks or bollards.

According to the PAP agency, in Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Dortmund, the three largest markets are protected with "proven anti-terror tools" against truck attacks.

German police warn that Christmas markets might particularly attract perpetrators motivated by religion:

"Christmas events usually represent an ideologically appropriate target for Islamist-motivated perpetrators due to their symbolism of Christian values."

It is worth being cautious while visiting holiday markets

Some of the most famous holiday markets in Europe include those organized in Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Nuremberg, Cologne, and Munich. Despite the charm of these places, travelers should remember to exercise particular caution.

When headed to a particular place, it is wise to follow events and information provided by local media. While touring, it's essential to keep a charged phone. Avoiding routine behaviors and sharing travel plans on social media is also prudent.
