U.S. upgrades Abrams tanks with insights from Ukraine frontlines
The Army Recognition portal reported that the U.S. plans to upgrade its Abrams M1A1 tanks. The modifications will incorporate lessons learned from the front lines in Ukraine.
The U.S. intends to modernize the Abrams M1A1 tanks based on experiences gained from their deployment in Ukraine. These tanks have recently faced challenges related to high vulnerability to modern anti-tank systems, primarily those such as Javelin and Stugna-P. Additionally, American Abrams M1A1s encountered logistic issues and high fuel consumption in Ukraine.
The new generation of Abrams
The introduction of a new generation of Abrams, the M1A3 version, is planned. This version will be more durable, lighter, and more fuel-efficient. The modernization aims to enhance the tanks' lifespan and efficiency, which are crucial for their use on the modern battlefield.
What exactly do Americans want to improve? The modernization of the Abrams M1A3 includes:
- Increasing resistance to modern anti-tank systems
- Reducing weight, consequently limiting fuel consumption
- Improving mobility
Let's recall that the Abrams tanks delivered by the U.S. arrived in Ukraine in the fall of 2023, boosting its defensive capabilities in the conflict with Russia. Ukrainian soldiers underwent appropriate training to effectively use these machines on the front lines. Thanks to the Ukrainians, Americans can now advance their tanks, understanding the demands of the modern battlefield.
American Abrams tanks
The Abrams M1A1 tank is equipped with a 120-mm cannon and two machine guns with calibers of 0.50 inches and 0.30 inches. The Ukrainian armed forces regard these American tanks highly for their powerful firepower and advanced fire control system, which are integral to their equipment. Despite their weight of about 66 tons, these tanks can reach speeds exceeding 40 mph thanks to engines producing up to 1500 hp.
