U.S. to bolster Poland's defense with advanced Apache helicopters and cruise missiles
Washington is set to offer Poland a substantial military package, including 96 AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters and over 800 advanced JASSM-ER cruise missiles. These missiles are designed for long-distance strikes, with capabilities that extend into Russian territories. Let's delve into the specifics of this weaponry.

The recent visit of Poland's President and Prime Minister to the United States proved pivotal for Poland's defense strategy. Highlights include the negotiation on the purchase of attack helicopters and securing financial backing from Washington to facilitate these acquisitions.
The agreed-upon arms package contains not only the AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II and AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles but also JASSM-ER air-to-ground missiles.
The JASSM-ER at a Glance
Originating from its predecessor, the JASSM air-to-ground missile, the JASSM-ER shares over 70% of its components but boasts a significantly extended range of approximately 559-621 miles.

Poland, having initiated the procurement process for these missiles back in 2018, now stands as the world's second operator of this advanced weaponry, already housing around 70 units in its arsenal.
The potential addition of over 800 JASSM-ER missiles greatly enhances Poland's military capabilities. These missiles, compatible with Polish F-16s and potentially F-35s in the future, can transport a 992-pound warhead up to 621 miles. Their stealth characteristics further complicate detection and interception.
Selecting the Right JASSM Variant for Poland
The announcement regarding the missile sale to Poland generated some confusion due to the use of varying terminologies. Official statements confirmed the sale of JASSM-ER missiles, yet references were made to AGM-158B-2 missiles.
The AGM-158B-2 designation pertains to a different variant, the JASSM XR, which offers an extended range of approximately 1,180 miles at the expense of a lighter warhead. As of 2023, Poland has also expressed interest in this version, broadening its strategic long-range capabilities.
