U.S. targets Russian GRU and Iranian guard for 2024 meddling
The United States has imposed sanctions on Russian and Iranian entities for interference in the 2024 elections and for spreading disinformation. The sanctions target the Russian GRU and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The U.S. administration announced sanctions on Russian and Iranian entities for election interference in 2024 and attempts to exacerbate conflicts. These sanctions include the Geopolitical Expertise Center, linked to the Russian GRU, and Iran's Cognitive Design Production Center.
Russia and Iran allegedly spread disinformation
According to the U.S. Treasury Department, the Geopolitical Expertise Center, founded by Alexander Dugin, created disinformation content using artificial intelligence. The objective was to disseminate false information swiftly through a network of websites.
The Iranian center's activities aimed to ignite conflicts among American voters.
President Joe Biden's administration also imposed sanctions on Russian judge Olesya Mendeleeva in a separate action. She sentenced Moscow councilor and human rights defender Alexei Gorinov for opposing the invasion of Ukraine. Sentenced to 7 years in prison, Gorinov was among the first opponents of the war to be punished in this manner.
