Preliminary police estimates suggest that 22 of the tourists on the bus and three individuals in the truck were killed in this tragic incident.

Six survivors were in critical condition and have since been transported to hospitals throughout the state of Bahia.

According to an initial investigation by local police, none of the victims were foreign nationals. The cause of the accident is currently under determination.

The mayor of the nearby town Jacobina declared a three-day mourning period on Monday. Authorities are in the process of organizing a joint vigil for the victims.

Another Brazilian tragedy

This incident marks yet another tragic bus accident in Brazil. In August of the previous year, seven Corinthians team fans from Sao Paulo were killed on a southeastern highway while returning from an away match against the Cruzeiro team in Belo Horizonte.

March 2022 also bore witness to an accident where at least 10 people were killed, and twenty were injured as a bus carrying workers crashed off a highway in southern Brazil.
