Tuscany counts losses: a huge cost of the downpour that hit Italy

Tuscany's authorities have outlined the effects of Cyclone "Ciarán" which hit the region. The cleanup from the heavy rain and floods that struck the areas of Prato, Florence, Pistoia, Livorno, and Pisa may amount to at least half a billion euros. Due to the devastation, a state of emergency has been declared by the government in these regions.

The regional authorities of Tuscany have assessed the impact of Cyclone "Ciarán". On Sunday, President Eugenio Giani stated during a press conference that initial reports from the local mayors indicated damages worth approximately 300 million euros.

However, he quickly emphasized that the costs will be considerably higher.

"I now understand that up to half a billion euros will be needed for restoration in the Florence-Prato-Pistoia area, and in addition, the damages in the Pisa and Livorno area also need careful estimation," Eugenio Giani said.

And yet, the total assessment of the damages is not complete. The damages caused by Cyclone "Ciarán" in the mountain villages of Tuscany still require evaluation.

Currently, around 10,000 homes and farms in the region are without power.

Currently, hundreds of volunteers are independently clearing the mud in the flooded town of Campi Bisenzio near Florence, among other areas. The destruction caused by the heavy rains and floods is extensive.

Severe downpours and thunderstorms continue to impact a large part of Italy, while strong winds persist. Sunday marked another day of turbulent weather; storm gusts also prompted damages in Rome and its vicinity.

The severe weather conditions in Tuscany have unfortunately claimed the lives of seven people.
