These chips are a cross between toast and chips. You might find similar products in the store, but these homemade versions taste the best. They're spicy, slightly garlicky, and so delicious that the bowl empties quickly. They're a budget-friendly snack that will be a hit at parties.

Bread chips

There are countless ways to use stale bread, so don't just throw it away. Instead of making casseroles or grinding it into breadcrumbs, opt for these delicious spiced chips. In my home, they're a favorite, even beating out popcorn and crackers. They're the perfect addition to soups, salads, and also a great standalone snack for crunching during an evening movie session.

These snacks are much cheaper than store-bought alternatives, and you can adjust the seasoning to your liking. Less garlic because you have a date, more hot pepper because you like it spicy? No problem; it's all up to you.

Ingredients:

  • About 7 oz of French baguette (approx. 2 pieces),
  • half an onion,
  • 3 cloves of garlic,
  • sweet and hot pepper to taste,
  • dried tomato seasoning or pizza seasoning,
  • dried basil,
  • about 1/2 cup of vegetable oil,
  • half a teaspoon of salt.

Preparation method:

  1. Peel the onion and garlic, cut them into smaller pieces, and blend them into a smooth paste with the oil or olive oil.
  2. Add seasonings to taste and mix until well combined.
  3. Slice the baguette into thin slices about 1/8 inch thick.
  4. Spread the prepared mixture on both sides of the bread slices.
  5. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring the chips are in a single layer and not stacked.
  6. Bake in an oven preheated to 320°F for about 5 minutes.
  7. After this time, flip them and bake for a few more minutes until they are browned on the other side.

Remove the chips from the oven and let them cool to room temperature. You can serve them as a standalone snack; they taste great with garlic sauce. They also work well as an addition to hummus, as a substitute for croutons in a salad, or to enhance the flavor of tomato cream soup. Enjoy!
